They are used in many electronic circuits to store and regulate electric current. This thin coating of oxide film acts as a dielectric material and electrically separates the anode and the cathode of the electrolytic capacitor. This dielectric layer is formed by a process of anodic oxidation which is the combined action of an electrical voltage and chemical reaction between electrolyte molecules and the anode surface.The oxides films are formed of different materials such as aluminum oxide, tantalum pentoxide, and manganese dioxide, depending on the type of electrolytic capacitor. The oxide film is generally fragile and very sensitive to excess current, humidity, and temperature.The construction and behavior of the electrolytic capacitors depend on the structure of the oxide film. Generally, the oxide film is located between two electrodes, forming two metal layers, one positive and the other negative in charge state. The dielectric oxide layer becomes a conductive path when current flows through the anode and forms a dielectric gap between the positive and negative electrodes, providing electrical insulation.When a voltage is applied between the two electrodes, the fixed charge accumulates on the oxide layer. This charge is the primary source of electrical energy.
