The 5KP210CA-B is a Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) – Diodes component commonly used for a variety of functions including surge protection, signal isolation, and ESD protection. It is an inherently digital component operating in the sub-nanosecond range, and is composed of a low forward voltage drop, low reverse leakage, and fast response time. It is generally used in applications where fast response time is critical, such as protection circuits, data line protection, signal attenuation, and EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) suppression.
The 5KP210CA-B is a low-capacitance, high effective volume TVS component and has a significant advantage over higher-capacitance and small-size devices in highly capacitive or highly dissipative environments. Its low capacitance and high effective volume make it ideal for use in high-speed, high-frequency applications where traditional silicon-based diode TVS components have limited effectiveness. In addition, its high electro-static discharge (ESD) immunity ensures excellent protection for delicate components without the need for additional protection devices.
The 5KP210CA-B has various applications such as in automotive, communication systems, consumer electronics, industrial control circuits, and computing equipment. The 5KP210CA-B can be used for data line protection, signal attenuation, and electro-magnetic interference (EMI) suppression. It also has IEC61000-4-2 (ESD) and IEC60601-1-2 (general medical device) ratings to ensure reliable performance in harsh environment where ESD protection is critical, and is also RoHS compliant.
The 5KP210CA-B is based on the principle of a planar silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR), which operates in the forward region and uses avalanche breakdown to protect against damaging transients. When the transient voltage passes a certain threshold value, a predictable breakdown occurs, resulting in immediate protection for downstream devices from electrical overstress.
At high and low temperatures, the reverse standing off voltage remains approximately the same, but the breakover voltage is suppressed providing the necessary protection. In addition, the 5KP210CA-B has an integrated ESD protection that can limit the discharge current below 500µA to ensure lightning protection.
As an additional protection measure, the 5KP210CA-B also incorporates a snapback feature which works by “snapping” the device back to its resting state during extreme transients. This feature increases the device’s robustness and helps to ensure reliable protection.
To ensure excellent performance and reliable transient protection, the 5KP210CA-B is provided with thermally matched protection for both positive and negative over-voltages, as well as in its datasheet a unique low capacitance curve which allows for effective signal transmission without distortion. The combination of these features provides versatile and reliable ESD and surge protection.
