The 5KP22-E3/54 TVS diode works by clamping transients to a safe level. When a transient voltage pulse is applied to the diode, the cathode-to-anode breakdown voltage (BV) is higher than the normal operating voltage. This will cause the diode to clamp the voltage at its breakdown voltage, thus limiting the transient voltage to a safe value. The diode is designed to absorb energy from the transient spike, allowing normal operation to continue. The diode has a voltage temp characteristic, which means that as the ambient temperature increases, the breakdown voltage margin increases.
