Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes, sometimes called Surge Suppressors, are semiconductor devices used to protect electronic circuits against overvoltage transients, providing an additional line of defense against electrical surges. 5KP22A-TP is one of the widely used TVS diode, which offers excellent protection from transients induced by electrostatic discharge (ESD) as well as from surges and spikes produced by electrical sources such as lighting.

Application field of 5KP22A-TP

5KP22A-TP is the type of silicon avalanche diode, which includes a stable integrated trigger voltage and high surge current rating. It is specifically designed for protection of sensitive electronic components from overvoltage transients that may occur on the power and signal lines. 5KP22A-TP is suitable for a broad range of applications such as security and storage systems, Ethernet switches, networking equipment, power transceivers, and DC-DC converters. It suits a wide range of environment and temperatures (-65°C to 175°C).

Working principle of 5KP22A-TP

5KP22A-TP absorbs and diverts the unwanted surge current when the overvoltage is encountered. It has an integrated trigger voltage that allows the device to respond and protect the line within an accepted voltage range. When the voltage starts increasing, the PN junction will become conductive and current starts to flow then the device responds and quickly increases the conductive current via avalanche breakdown. It is built to absorb and divert the energy to the ground safely. Once the transient voltage is reduced after striking the diode and drops below avalanche break over voltage, it will reset itself automatically and diode become non-conductive again.

Advantages of 5KP22A-TP

5KP22A-TP is a small devices, but it can protect the circuits from the heavy transients and ESD on the power and signal lines.
