TVS, Transient Voltage Suppressors, Diodes also known as Surge Suppressor, are designed for protection of low voltage circuits from oversurge, ESD, Electro-Static Discharge, issues caused by lightning strikes or simply by temporary spikes on the power lines.The 5KP28A-E3/51 is a member of Transient Voltage Suppressors family manufactured by ON Semiconductors. It is used in many low-voltage applications such as cell phones, tablets, computers, portable electronics, etc.The 5KP28A-E3/51 has two terminals: cathode and anode. The cathode is the negative terminal and the anode is the positive terminal. The device operates in two modes. In normal mode, it acts as a normal diode which allows current flow in only one direction, from anode to cathode. In surge mode, it acts as an integrated protection device and suddenly starts to conduct current from both directions.This device is designed to protect circuit components and devices from short-term overvoltage surges caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD), lightning and transient overvoltages. It is a stud type device that is easily connected to the circuit. It’s a leadless surface-mount device designed to be soldered to the PCB and this will make the device less susceptible to vibration.It has a high peak pulse power dissipation of 3.5 kW and a peak pulse current of 12.5 A. It also limits the reverse leakage current to 10 μA. The device is available in two packages: DO-213AA (miniMELF) and SOD-123W (PowerMELF). The device is RoHS compliant and is qualified for use in automotive applications. The 5KP28A-E3/51 can be connected in parallel to provide a higher protection level. For example, when connected in small arrays of 4 in parallel, it can handle a peak pulse power dissipation of up to 14 kW.When the overvoltage spike occurs, the 5KP28A-E3/51 device quickly activates and conducts the surge current away from the sensitive electronic circuits thus protecting them from any damages. Once the overvoltage subsides, the device returns to its normal low-voltage state.The 5KP28A-E3/51 is a highly reliable and cost effective protection device that is suitable for use in many high-end industrial and residential applications.
