802.11a/b/g/n/ac are technologies used in wireless Local Area Network (LANs) and is a stand abbreviation for the 802.11 standard published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).The 802.11 family essentially includes communications protocol and devices that operate at frequency bands around 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.
These devices allow users to send multiple signals around an environment, usually within a few hundred feet, to establish a wireless network. Its various sub-standards determine the technologies used in said networks.
802.11a and 802.11b both work within the 2.4 GHz band. 802.11a operates at a maximum speed of 54 Mbps and can reach up to 150 feet from the access point. 802.11b operates at 11 Mbps with a range of only 300 feet. 802.11b is more common for home networks, while 802.11a is more popular in office environments.
The 802.11g and 802.11n are typically used within the 2.4 GHz range, but they are faster than their predecessors. 802.11g can reach speeds of up to 54 Mbps and a range of 300 feet. 802.11n incorporates multiple input multiple output (MIMO) technology and offers speeds of up to 300 Mbps and a range of up to 900 feet. Both 802.11g and 802.11n are becoming more popular and are common in a variety of contexts.
802.11ac is the latest version of the IEEE 802.11 standard. Although it operates in the same 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequencies, it has much higher data rates compared to previous technologies. 802.11ac allows for up to close to 1 Gbps or 1,300 Mbps, depending on the type of wireless router used. It is the most popular standard for wireless users and has been dubbed as “Wi-Fi 5”.
802.11 is a technology that enables multiple computers to communicate with one another wirelessly without the need of wires or cables. This is accomplished by using multiple channels which can be hopping in nature. By hopping in nature, this means that each channel is only used briefly before the signal is moved to another one. This is done in order to avoid interference from other channels.
In an 802.11 network, each participating station (computer) must ‘listen’ for incoming messages such as data packets and acknowledge their receipt. The access point used to communicate with the various computers is responsible for managing the signals sent and received across the network.
In order for an 802.11 network to function, each station must have an IP address. This IP address is used to route traffic to its respective destination. When data is sent to one station, it is transmitted in small packets. Each packet contains the IP address of the destination station, as well as a payload of data. As the packet moves across the network, it is handled by various routers that look up its destination.
Once the packet reaches its destination, it is reassembled into its original message. The receiving station must then acknowledge receipt of the packet. This acknowledgement is sent back to the access point and the data transfer is complete.
Although 802.11 is being used to wirelessly enable devices, it is also being used in other areas. This includes fixed and mobile networks like WiMAX, mesh networks, and backhaul networks. In addition, it is also being used to create home networks for the streaming of audio and video content, as well as bridging solutions in order to connect remote networks.
To sum up, 802.11 is a popular technology used to enable wireless Local Area Networks (LANs). This technology operates in the 2.4 and 5GHz frequency bands and is capable of reaching data transfer speeds ranging from 2Mbps to close to 1Gbps. As well as providing networking functionality, 802.11 is also being used in other areas, such as supporting fixed and mobile networks and providing home network solutions.
