Introduction The 74F161ASC (Advanced Scrambler Chain) is a Multi-Bit synchronous counter implemented in advanced CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) technology. It is designed as a building block for clock signal synchronous operations in high performance systems. It is available as standard 16 pin DIP, SOIC and TSSOP packages for easy mounting and reliability.Functionality The 74F161ASC is based on the popular counting circuit design and is designed to be able to count up (binary or BCD), count down, divide by 2, 4 or 8 and carry out other applications. It can operate in a variety of clocking modes, including oscillator, count-by-one and ripple synchronizer.Application Field The 74F161ASC is mostly used in digital system applications such as counting, dividing, frequency division, rate conversion and parallel synchronization. It is composed of a number of flip-flops connected in a cascade configuration. When the Clock input is driven by a positive edge, the data on the data inputs is loaded into the first flip-flop and then presented on the output. Each time the Clock is driven by a positive edge, the data is loaded into the next flip-flop in the chain and is presented on the output. The counter is continuously driven by the Clock at a rate determined by the frequency of the Clock. The cascaded flip-flops are arranged in stages in the counter and when the Clock is driven by a positive edge, all stages are updated. A stage is referred to as the number of flip-flops loaded by a single clock edge. The common output of these flip-flops provides the binary count of the total number of stages.The counter can also be operated in ripple synchronizer mode. In this mode, the Clock is driven by a single edge and the data is loaded into each stage in turn, thereby creating a ripple effect. This mode is useful in applications where the count rate is slower than the rate of the Clock.
