The 74HC4017PW is a high-speed silicon CMOS 10-stage Johnson decade counter. As such, it is used mainly to divide the incoming frequency by 10 and generate the corresponding outputs Q0 to Q9. It belongs to the 4000 series of CMOS logic, and is a very popular general-purpose chip among hobbyists, electronics engineers and students alike. It is quite capable of handling high frequencies up to 33MHz, making it an ideal choice for many applications requiring clock divider/frequency divider circuits.
The 74HC4017PW is a CMOS counter chip and so it is composed of transistors connected and arranged in different ways to act like electrical switches.
