74HCT163 is a 4-bit, fully synchronous, binary, up or down counter that can be binary up or down. It has a complement B output. 74HCT163DB is widely used in serial data transmission conversion, frequency selection, frequency dividers and so on.
Application Field: In addition to its use as a standard binary counter, the 74HCT163DB can be used to count burst pulses, serial data pulses and pulses generated by a variety of other circuits. It can also be used as a programmable frequency divider. It is often used in multiplying clocks and dividing clock frequency circuits, computer external clock circuits, high-frequency device triggering circuits, serial data transmission conversion and etc.
Working Principle: 74HCT163DB is a 4-bit binary up-counter. It consists of a 4-bit binary counter, a Clock (CP) input, a Reset (MR) input, an Up/Down (UD) input, a terminal count indicator (TCO) output, a complement B output, and an Enable (E) input with an active LOW logic level. The counter has two operating modes, count up or down, which is dependent upon the logic level at the Up/Down (UD) input. When UD = "LOW", the counter counts up, otherwise, when UD = "HIGH", the counter counts down.
The Clock (CP) input is used to clock the counter. Each clock pulse advances the count sequence, provided the Enable (E) input is "HIGH". The Reset (MR) input overrides the Clock (CP) input and resets the counter to the "0000". The TC output provides an indication of terminal count, that is when the counter output reaches either of its two extremes.
When the UD input is "HIGH", the counter counts down with each clock edge as long as E = "HIGH". For example, if the counter is in the state "0000" and a negative edge clock is presented, the counter transitions its state to "1111", which is the maximum count. When the Enable input is "HIGH", the TC output is "HIGH". The counter will then stay in the maximum count state until the next positive clock edge is presented, or the Reset (MR) input is pulsed. The counter output (Q0 to Q3) is then reset to "0000".
When the UD input is "LOW", the counter counts up with each clock edge as long as E = "HIGH". For example, if the counter is in the state "1111" and a positive edge clock is presented, the counter transitions its state to "0000" which is the minimum count. When the Enable input is "HIGH", the TC output is "HIGH". The counter will then stay in the minimum count state until the next negative clock edge is presented, or the Reset (MR) input is pulsed. The counter output (Q0 to Q3) is then reset to "0000".
