Optoisolators – Logic Outputs are commonly used to provide electrical insulation between logic circuits with different power supply potentials and also to provide noise immunity. For applications requiring isolation of digital output circuits from logic control circuits, the 74OL6011W optoisolator is an ideal choice.

The 74OL6011W is a logic-output optoisolator with dual channels in a wide 8-pin SO package. This optoisolator has an input control terminal (LED) and a NPN output transistor. The LED, in presence of an input voltage applied, emits light which is detected by the photodetector, hence it allows for the electrical insulation of the input logic circuits from the output control circuits. Isolating the logic control circuits from output circuits requires no additional change in components or wiring.

The input terminal of the optoisolator is driven by the logic control circuit and is connected to its power source. The input terminal is also connected to the LED via a current-limiting resistor. The LED\'s input current turns on the photodetector, which in turn switches on the NPN output transistor, this opens the gate between the circuits and allowing the output circuit to be driven off of the logic control circuit.

The output of the NPN transistor has an open-collector designation, which allows the transistor to be used with any positive voltage within its range (up to 12V). Additionally, this open-collector configuration allows the optoisolator to be used with a wide variety of digital logic technologies such as CMOS and TTL logic families. The optoisolator has a Darlington configuration with a monolithic transistor that helps to improve speed, current gain, and collector-emitter saturation voltage.

The high-voltage isolation provided by the 74OL6011W optoisolator makes it suitable for applications requiring safety isolation, noise immunity, and motor control. The optoisolator can be used to interface sensing and switching circuits, to drive relays and solenoids, and, due to its high-speed switch control, it is suitable for frequency-controlled devices. This optoisolator is capable of handling switching currents of up to 300mA. Additionally, the optoisolator is rated for an isolation voltage of 5,000 Vrms.

The 74OL6011W optoisolator provides an easy and efficient way to connect two different circuits of potentially different independent power supplies while providing a high level of electrical isolation between them. This optoisolator is well-suited for a wide variety of switching and sensing applications where the transmission of digital logic signals from separated circuits is needed.
