Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Sprague’s high reliability aluminum electrolytic capacitors, type 80D272P035JA2DE3, are designed and qualified to improve operability, enhance safety and minimize maintenance in industrial, consumer and military/aerospace applications. The capacitors employ advanced construction and paper/oil dielectric composition for reliable, long life operation in demanding environments. Ideal for use in many applications, such as spike suppression, filtering, and line regulation, the capacitors have a rated temperature range of -55° C to +85° C and a capacitance range of 25 μF to 3000 μF.

Application Field and Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are mainly used in power supplies, audio amplifiers, TV receivers, computers, light dimmers and motor controls as they a produce high energy density than other capacitors. These capacitors are particularly suited for operating at a range of temperatures, including -55 degrees to +85 degrees Celsius, with a capacitance range of 25 to 3000 microfarads. Most capacitors are rated at 50 V or more and have longer life cycles and better high frequency performance but tend to be slightly bulkier in size.

The working principle behind aluminum electrolytic capacitors lies in a reversed chemical reaction. It consists of a thin layer of aluminum oxide formed with the help of electrolytes, allowing electric charge to be stored. The electrolyte acts as an insulator keeping the two aluminum plates separated and avoiding direct contact.

The process of storing electric charges or ions is known as charge separation. Thus, when a negative voltage is applied at the anode, the negative charges try to move to the cathode. This creates a positive electric field between the two terminals and reversal happens when a positive voltage is applied.

Due to the presence of electrolytes, aluminum electrolytic capacitors have limited amount of charge-carrying capacity, i.e. it has a lower capacitance rating than ceramic- or film capacitors. Besides, its large physical volume and weight in comparison to other capacitors again restricts its use. To sum up, aluminum electrolytic capacitor is most suitable for applications which require large capacitance such as power regulation or spike suppression.
