When a voltage is applied across the two electrodes of the capacitor, one electrode becomes positive and causes current to flow through the electrolyte, which surrounds the other electrode. The current causes the aluminum foil to oxidize, leaving behind a thin layer of aluminum oxide. This aluminum oxide layer acts as a dielectric, or insulating barrier, and prevents further current from flowing through the capacitor. Due to the dielectric nature of the aluminum oxide layer, the capacitor can store a certain amount of energy in the form of electric fields. This stored energy can be released back out again when the voltage across the capacitor is reversed. The energy stored in a capacitor is proportional to the size of the capacitor’s outer plate area, the voltage applied across it, and the dielectric constant of the dielectric material used.
