Pneumatics

Pneumatics is the application of pressurized air to do useful work. This type of mechanical technology is based on the principles of physics which states that if the pressure of a gas is increased, it expands and therefore has the potential to do work. The basic premise of pneumatic systems is that air is compressed and held in a container which is then connected to a mechanical device or tool. They are also used in various hydraulic machinery, such as elevators, cranes, lifts, excavators and other moving equipment. The primary advantage of hydraulics is that the pressurized fluid can provide a considerable amount of power, thus making it possible to operate machinery at much higher speeds than would be possible with pneumatics.The basic components of a hydraulic system are the power source, the valve circuit assembly and the actuator. The power source provides the necessary energy to move the hydraulic fluid. This could be either an electric motor or a diesel or gas engine-driven pump. The valve circuit assembly is responsible for controlling the direction the hydraulic fluid moves through the system and the pressure at which the fluid moves. The actuator, which is usually a cylinder, is responsible for converting the pressurized hydraulic fluid into mechanical energy, often through the use of a piston or wedge. Sometimes, depending on the application, both mechanized and pressurized systems are used in combination to provide an even greater degree of control and power. This is known as a hybrid system. Hybrid systems are typically used in high power applications such as large construction equipment and military tanks. All in all, pneumatics and hydraulics are both incredibly useful technologies for moving and controlling heavy equipment. Both types of systems offer efficient and reliable performance, and both offer the potential for considerable cost savings.
