Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are polarised components mainly used to store energy or buffer voltage spikes in a power electronic system. They are considered the most popular type of capacitors, due to their affordable cost and widely available availability.
The two main components of an electrolytic capacitor are the anode and the cathode, which are made of two conducting plates separated by a thin insulating layer. The anode plate is made of highly purified aluminum foil, and the cathode plate is made of a conductive material such as aluminum, copper, or nickel. Between the anode and cathode plates, a highly purified electrolyte serves as the dielectric medium for the capacitor.
electrochemical reaction between the aluminum anode and the electrolyte, the insulating layer starts to form. This reaction is responsible for the strong capacitance of electrolytic capacitors, allowing for a larger capacitance than what you would find in other types of capacitors.
The two main categories of aluminum electrolytic capacitors are axial capacitors and radial capacitors. Axial capacitors typically have a longer body, with two lead wires for connecting the electron plates, while radial capacitors are typically smaller with only one lead wire. Radial capacitors are preferred for high density applications, and are significantly cheaper than axial capacitors.
The 860130473002 aluminum electrolytic capacitor (usually referred to as the KEMET 8601) is a popular and widely used component in many different power electronic systems. Due to its long life expectancy and small size, this capacitor is particularly useful for large design systems where space is limited. This capacitor is mainly used for filtering, coupling, and bypassing current, and is commonly used as a voltage regulator.
The working principle of these capacitors is that when current flows through the anode, the electrolyte inside the capacitor reacts with the aluminum and a dielectric layer is created, storing electrical energy as a charge. This charge then creates a voltage difference between the anode and the cathode plates, creating a potential energy for the capacitor.
This makes it possible for the capacitor to store significant amounts of electrical energy while dissipating very little power during operation. This provides a convenient way to store and release energy in short bursts without affecting system stability, thus making aluminum electrolytic capacitors essential components in many electronic designs.
