Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors: Application Field and Working Principle
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of capacitors that use aluminum oxide and oxide-coated aluminium foil as the two electrodes working together to create an electrolytic field and store electrical energy. These type of capacitors are known as the most widely used capacitors, owing to their significantly high capacitance, albeit at the same time the highest equivalent series resistance (ESR) and equivalent circuit leak current.Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used in a wide variety of applications, including consumer electronics, home appliances and automotive components. For example, they are used for filtering and bypassing purposes in voltage regulators, radio receivers and television sets. They are also used in power supplies, audio power amplifiers and audio equipment in general. Moreover, they are also employed as decoupling capacitors in order to reduce high-frequency noise voltages, as well as to store energy for various electronic applications. The basic principle through which aluminum electrolytic capacitors work can be attributed to the process of electrolysis. This technique involves two electrodes, one of which is made out of aluminum oxide that is insulated with a barrier layer. The second electrode is typically the aluminium foil. When these two electrodes come in contact with an electrolyte, an electric current is generated in the form of an electrolytic field, which in turn results in an electrical charge. The electric current created is capable of storing energy in the form of a potential difference between the two electrodes, creating a capacitance. The capacitance of the capacitor is regulated by the size and composition of the two electrodes. These type of capacitors are preferred for their high capacitance - typically in a range from 4 to 5500 µF - and their low cost. Additionally, aluminum electrolytic capacitors can tolerate high temperatures better than other types of capacitors, making them suitable for use in applications with stringent temperature regulations. However, they also have some drawbacks, such as their very low rated ripple current, their limited life time, and the need for a higher voltage running over them in order to work efficiently. In conclusion, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in consumer electronics, automotive components and home appliances. They offer a high capacitance, a low cost and excellent high-temperature performance, making them very attractive in many applications. The working principle of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is based on electrolysis, with two electrodes coming in contact with an electrolyte and creating an electric current in the form of an electrolytic field.
