Working Principle of A5KP160A-G

A5KP160A-G is an unidirectional device, meaning it allows current to pass through it only in one direction. It is made of two interconnected back-to-back pairs of diodes. Each diode has a low “on” voltage drop which reduces losses. This device protects against load-induced transients as well as lightning-induced surges. In normal operation, the device is held in a reverse bias state, which prevents any current flow from the load to the source. When an over voltage is applied, the diode switches to its low forward bias voltage drop. This will reduce the transient induced voltage on the load. Upon removal of the overvoltage, the device will reset back to the reverse bias state.
