The basic structure of a zener diode consists of a P-type semiconductor element, which is connected to an N-type semiconductor element. One end of the N-type semiconductor element is then connected to a cathode while the other end of the P-type semiconductor element is connected to an anode. This structure creates a junction that connects these two ends of the semiconductor element and allow current to pass through it. When there is no voltage present across the junction, the junction behaves like an insulator and does not permit current to pass through it. But when an electric potential appears across the junction, electrons from the N-type can fill in the P-type and create a path for current to flow. This path causes a voltage drop across the junction. The amount of voltage drop is determined by the amount of voltage present across the junction. When the value of the applied voltage exceeds the Zener, or breakdown, voltage of the diode, a large current will flow through the junction and cause a voltage drop that is regulated to a specific value. This specific value can be adjusted by changing the breakdown voltage of the diode.
