RF Mixers
RF mixers are a type of active electronic device typically used in a radio receiver and in a transmitter to convert one frequency signal to another. It is the component that can convert energy from one frequency range to another through the process of mixing, or heterodyning.The AD608AR-REEL7 from Analog Devices is a diode double-balanced RF mixer designed for frequencies from 8 to 2000 MHz. It uses a double balanced diode and wire bonding construction in a die form. This ensures higher isolation between the in and out ports which helps to reduce unwanted signal mixing. The device is ideal for applications such as doubling or halving the receiver or transmitter frequency.The AD608AR-REEL7 provides excellent performance in both receiver and transmitter applications. Its low-noise double balanced design delivers high linearity and low distortion. This allows for single-sideband up-conversion and down-conversion as well as double-sideband up-conversion and down-conversion. Additionally, the AD608AR-REEL7 provides an accurate output level with low phase noise. This makes it suitable for frequency hopping, signal processing and other applications that require low-noise performance.The device operates on a 5V supply and typically uses an input port offset voltage of 1.2V. This provides a good balance between the gain and power consumption of the mixer. The DC offset voltage allows DC bias current to be minimized which helps to reduce the power consumption of the mixer.The working principle of the AD608AR-REEL7 is based on the nonlinear resistive properties of diode junctions. As the input voltage is applied to the diode junction, two signals are generated. The first signal has a frequency that is equal to the sum of the input and local oscillator frequencies. The second signal has a frequency that is equal to the difference between the input and local oscillator frequencies. These two signals are then amplified, filtered, and combined to produce the desired output signal.The AD608AR-REEL7 provides excellent performance in both receiver and transmitter applications.
