1. Describe
The AD637ARZ is a complete high precision rms-to-dc converter that calculates the true rms value of any complex waveform. It delivers performance unprecedented in integrated circuit rms-to-dc converters and rivals discrete and modular technologies in accuracy, bandwidth, and dynamic range. The AD637ARZ calculates the true rms, mean square, or absolute value of any complex ac (or ac plus dc) input waveform and gives an equivalent dc output voltage. The true rms value of a waveform is more useful than the average rectified signal because it is directly related to the power of the signal. The root mean square value of a statistical signal is related to the standard deviation of the signal. Excellent crest factor compensation allows measurement of signals with crest factors up to 10 with an additive error of less than 1%. The wide bandwidth of the AD637ARZ allows the measurement of signals up to 600 kHz at 200 mV rms input and up to 8 MHz at input levels above 1 V rms. The direct dB value of the rms output in the 60 dB range is available on a separate pin. An externally programmed reference current allows the user to select the 0 dB reference voltage to correspond to any level between 0.1 V and 2.0 V rms. A chip select connection on the AD637ARZ allows the user to reduce the supply current from 2.2 mA to 350 µA when the rms function is not used. This feature helps add accurate rms measurements to remote or handheld applications where minimum power consumption is critical. Also, when the AD637ARZ is powered down, the output goes into a high impedance state. This allows multiple AD637ARZs to be connected together to form a broadband rms multiplexer. The input circuitry of the AD637ARZ is protected against overload voltages that exceed supply levels. If the supply voltage is lost, the input signal will not damage the input. The AD637ARZ is laser wafer trimmed to achieve rated performance without external trimming. The only external component required is a capacitor to set the averaging period. The value of this capacitor also determines low frequency accuracy, ripple level and settling time. On-chip buffer amplifiers are used as input buffers or in active filte configurations. This filter can be used to reduce the amount of AC ripple, thus improving accuracy. The AD637ARZ is available in J and K grades for commercial temperature range (0°C to 70°C) applications, A and B grades for industrial temperature range (−40°C to +85°C) applications, and precision S grade rated The temperature range is −55°C to +125°C. All versions are available in hermetically sealed 14-pin SBDIP, 14-pin CERDIP and 16-pin SOIC_W packages.
