PMIC - RMS to DC Converters are a type of power-management integrated circuit (PMIC) which serves to convert an alternating current (AC) of variable magnitude into a direct current (DC) of variable magnitude. The AD637SD/883B is a high-efficiency, low-power device specifically designed for this purpose.
Application Field
The AD637SD/883B has been designed for applications that require precise measurement of AC signals such as industrial process control, power line monitoring and power supply control. The device can also be used for audio measurement, signature detection, and gain or phase adjustment. Furthermore, the device is suitable for use in bridges and in ultrasound systems.
Principle of Operation
The AD637SD/883B employs a precision full-wave rectifier, pair of matched sample and hold amplifiers, and a voltage to current converter to produce an output DC voltage proportional to the peak invf amplitude of an AC input signal. The input signal is rectified using a precision rectifier, and its peak value is stored on an input capacitor (C1) by the sample-and-hold (S/H) circuit. The stored voltage is then transferred to the output capacitor (C2) by the voltage to current converter, which is followed by a low-pass filter (R1 and R2). The filtered voltage at the output gives the desired RMS to DC conversion.
The device consumes very low power, typically only 4mA, making it ideal for applications where power conservation is of the utmost importance. The device is highly accurate, providing a total error band of typically ±6%. This combination of accuracy and power efficiency makes the AD637SD/883B an excellent choice for a wide range of applications.
