Data Acquisition – Analog to Digital Converters (ADC)

Analog to digital converters (ADC) are crucial components in electronics engineering applications and serve to transfer analog signals into digital signals. The AD8082LCN is a widely used 8-bit, monolithic, low power analog to digital converter with two channels.

Design

The AD802LCN offers a industry standard 025-inch package with 8 pins and a maximum throughput of 30 Msps (megasamples per second). This device comes with an inbuilt track and hold oscillator, Vernier delay line and a chopper-stabilized, pipelined counting ADC architecture. This ADC is made up of 4 stages: the samples, hold, the sum-and-dump modulator, the Vernier delay line and a high-speed low-power successive approximation register (SAR). With +/- 5-volt range reference, AD802LCN supports single-supply and dual-supply VCM operation. It comes with a wide operating temperature range, from -40 to +125°C and 2.7V to 5.25 V single supply operation and also 5V dual supply operation.

Working Principle

The working principle of the ADC is known as the successive approximation algorithm (SAR). In the SAR technique, each of the bits in the converter result is captured by successive analog or digital comparison operations. The first event of the conversion cycle is to sample the analog signal and store it into a sample and hold circuit. The sample and hold circuit then pulses the Compare flag, which causes the SAR logic to start the conversion process. This logic then performs a series of digital comparing operations, in which the SAR begins by comparing the analog input with the mid-way reference voltage. Depending on the outcome of the comparison, either a ‘1’ or a ‘0’ will be written to the output Register. The succeeding comparison process keeps repeating until the bits required for the conversion are written to the output Register. The Shift Register contains an N-bit register that stores the digital output of the converter, where N represents the word length of the converter. The data is parallel-loaded into the Shift Register, which then can be shifted out serially at a rate set by the ADC clock frequency.
