RF Switches: ADG918BRM-REEL Application Field and Working Principle
RF switches are used to route and switch RF signals non-invasively without introducing signal loss or distortion. The ADG918BRM-REEL switch is designed to be a single-pole, single-throw device with excellent linearity and low on-resistance. Its primary application field lies in wireless communication, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, satellite radios, and cellular phone systems. The switch is also used in many other applications, such as smart cards, robotic systems, and medical devices. The ADG918BRM-REEL switch is constructed of four components: Two GaAs switching FETs, one GaAs logic driver, and a CMOS control logic. The two FETs use two source-side gates to create a single-pole, single-throw switch. The FETs are driven by a logic driver connected to the control logic, allowing them to perform open circuiting and closing operations of the switch. The control logic implements several digital control signals to operate the FETs. An “enable” signal controls the enable/disable of the switch. A “switch” signal, when high, causes the FETs to be opened and closed by the logic driver. The logic can also generate a “direction” signal, which determines the channel direction of signal flow. Finally, the “impedance” signal provides the input impedance value. The logic driver is used to control the on/off operations of the FETs. It provides the necessary voltage and gate resistance to switch the drain and gate nodes between high and low states. The logic driver also provides sufficient voltage maintenance for the stable RF characteristics over temperature range. When the “enable” signal is high, the ADG918BRM-REEL switch is activated. The logic driver then applies the reverse bias to the source-side gates of the FETs. This allows the FETs to pass or halt signals depending on the input “switch” signal. When the “switch” signal is high, the FETs are opened, allowing signals to flow through the switch circuit. When it is low, the FETs are closed and the switch is off.The input impedance of the ADG918BRM-REEL switch can be selected through the “impedance” signal. The logic driver adjusts the source-side gate voltages to adjust the transistor operating points, thus controlling the impedance of the switch. This provides excellent linearity, with minimal effect on signal distortion and power consumption.The ADG918BRM-REEL switch is primarily used in wireless communication systems for its low on-resistance and excellent linearity. It can be used in cellular phone systems, Bluetooth systems, Wi-Fi networks, and GPS receivers to provide signal route control.
