Power Management IC (PMIC) is an integrated circuit that regulates power supply to other components in an electronic device. PMIC come in many forms, each specifically designed for the application in which it is used. One example of a PMIC is the ADM1021ARQ, designed for Thermal Management applications where temperature control and monitoring of components is required. The ADM1021ARQ is a Fan Speed Controller (FSC) IC. It is designed to control the speed of a fan in order to regulate temperature and prolong the life of a component or system. The working principle of the ADM1021ARQ revolves around the fan’s duty cycle. A fan’s duty cycle determines the amount of power being supplied to the fan. The duty cycle ranges from 0-100% and the fan’s speed increases as the duty cycle increases. The ADM1021ARQ uses this principle to adjust the fan speed.
When operating in manual mode, the ADM1021ARQ will keep the fan’s duty cycle at the user-specified level. When operating in automatic mode, the ADM1021ARQ will detect the environment temperature and adjust the fan’s duty cycle accordingly. The ADM1021ARQ is able to control fans up to 1.2A and has a wide operating range of 4.5V to 28V. It also includes various safety and protection mechanisms such as over-temperature, over-current and over-voltage protection. Furthermore, it is equipped with various diagnostic features such as Brown-out and Fault detection.
