.IntroductionThe ADP1864-BL-EVALZ is an evaluation board developed by Analog Devices providing capabilities to evaluate certain AC-DC and DC-DC converter switching regulator circuits. These circuits offer a host of application options, making them suitable for both complex digital systems as well as simple analog circuits. This evaluation board is configurable to work as both buck and boost converters.FunctionalityThe ADP1864-BL-EVALZ operates according to a variety of input and output parameters, as well as circuit topologies. Its input voltage range is between 4.5V and 18V. The board is designed to handle power switches at frequencies of between 350kHz and 900kHz, with the adjustment available via pulse-width modulation (PWM).It is capable of providing adjustable output voltages between 0.6V and 6V, and has a variable output current rating of up to 0.9A. For higher current values, multiple boards may be used in parallel. To offer more flexibility, the ADP1864-BL-EVALZ requires an external inductor to completely configure the converter and so may be implemented in a variety of solutions.TopologyThe ADP1864-BL-EVALZ is composed of three main parts: the buck-boost topology, two internal high-side drivers, and two external drivers. The buck-boost topology allows the board to operate both in boost and in buck mode, for increased efficiency and greater flexibility. In the buck mode, the input voltage is higher than the required output voltage, and the output current is regulated by controlling the on-time of the internal power switch FETs. In the boost mode, the board uses the same internal FETs to control the boost fraction during the on-time of the PWM signal, thus regulating the output voltage. ProtectionAn advantage of the ADP1864-BL-EVALZ is its protective features. It features an over-current protection circuit, which uses an additional FET to switch off the converter when the output current exceeds a preset limit. This greatly increases the safety of the system. Furthermore, the board also features thermal protection, which reduces the switch frequency in case the sheet temperature of the main FET exceeds a certain limit.ConclusionADP1864-BL-EVALZ is a convenient evaluation board for many AC-DC and DC-DC conversion needs.
