The ADP3050ARZ-5 is a step-down voltage regulator from the DC-DC switching regulator family within the PMIC Voltage Regulators. This device is a highly integrated power solution with wide input and output voltage range, high efficiency, ultra-low quiescent current, fast response, and many other features.
The ADP3050ARZ-5 is designed to be used in a variety of different devices and applications. Its excellent performance makes it ideal for a broad range of applications including mobile phones, digital cameras, notebook computers, DVD players, gaming consoles, embedded systems, automotive power equipment, desktop power supplies and more. The device can provide up to 8A output current, allowing this regulator to meet the needs of most modern applications.
The ADP3050ARZ-5 works by first converting the input voltage into an intermediate value, usually higher than the desired output voltage. Then, using a switch-mode control loop, the device modulates the on-off occasions of a MOSFET switch connected between input and output. When the switch is on, the energy is stored in the output filter inductor and the capacitor, while when it is off, the stored energy is transferred to the load to maintain the output voltage at the desired level. This process is called switch-mode operation, and it allows the power regulator to achieve very high efficiency.
One of the greatest features of this device is that it has wide input and output range capabilities. The input voltage range for the ADP3050ARZ-5 is from 4.5V to 30V and the output voltage can be set from 0.6V up to the same value as the input voltage. Additionally, this device also has an adjustable output current limit with a maximum of 8A which allows for very high efficiency and reliable operation.
Other features of this regulator includes an integrated Emitter Followed (EF) Control Loop, low operating temperature, and low switching noise. The EF Control Loop provides extra stability and protection to the system and it works by monitoring the feedback node and compensating to keep the output voltage in its specified range at all times. The low operating temperature is achieved with a 2-stage thermal design that helps ensure the thermal conditions of the device remain within an acceptable range. Low switching noise is achieved by minimizing the current spikes during switch transitions.
