Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are capacitors made from an aluminum oxide film and aluminum foil layered together, with a liquid electrolyte of either electrolytic grade ethylene glycol or sulfonated polyether as a medium between the two layers. The anode layer is usually a thin film of aluminum oxide deposited on the surface of the aluminum foil. On the other side of the anode foil is a thicker layer of catalyst which acts as a buffer and helps to maintain a consistent electric field between the two layers. The electrolyte fills the space between the two layers providing electrical conduction between them.
