One is the anode these are conveniently identified by a grey stripe around the body of the capacitor, the other is the cathode, as identified by a black band around the body of the capacitor. A third element is the electrolyte, usually a mixture of gases and/or a liquid, which is often toxic. The two conductive surfaces are separated by the electrolyte, which more often than not is impregnated into the paper element which separates the two aluminum foils.
