Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors have two anode plates, one of which is made of aluminum foil and the other of an electrolyte-soaked paper. The two plates are connected by a conductor strip and the combination is rolled into a cylinder. Inside the cylinder, the electrolyte provides ionic conduction between the anode and the cathode. The anode plates are the conducting plates of the capacitor, and are generally made of aluminum or other conductive materials. The electrolyte is an aqueous solution of aluminum hydroxide and acetic acid. The aluminum hydroxide releases protons while the acetic acid releases negative ions. The positive ions of the electrolyte are attracted to the cathode plate while the negative ions of the electrolyte are attracted to the anode plates. When an external voltage is applied, a current is generated between the anode and the cathode plates, generating electrostatic attraction between them, thus forming an electric field in the capacitor. The capacitance of the capacitor is determined by the surface area of the anode+ cathode/the distance between the conducting plates.
