AK1541 is a high-speed, high-precision clock generator with wide frequency coverage and low harmonic distortion. It is a well-known clock generator used in many fields such as PC, server, mobile communications, automotive and industrial control. This article introduces the application field and working principle of AK1541.
Application Field
AK1541 can generate 4 different clock frequencies from 5 to 24 MHz, with adjustable range from 10 to 40 MHz. It is suitable for use in any system from slow to fast data rates. Besides, the device is compliant with the Jitter requirements of specific protocols such as DDR2, DDR3, SSTL, and FPD-Link III. The device is also suitable for systems requiring low jitter such as laptop PCs, cellular phones, cable modems, digital televisions (DTVs), digital video disc (DVD) players and recorders, home networking products, HDTVs, and CD audio.
The exact frequency and jitter requirements of the system should be followed to ensure the device is suitable for the application. Additionally, the AK1541 can be used in a variety of applications requiring clock frequency, such as clock and data recovery, communications networking equipment, Baseband and broadband cable systems, analog-to-digital converters, digital-to-analog converters, data trapping, cross-point controllers, clock and subframe synchronization, contact-less transmission systems and other consumer-related electronic devices.
Working Principle
The AK1541 device consists of four oscillators, selectable bridge oscillator, digital frequency synthesizer, voltage-controlled Oscillator (VCO) Circuits and integrated digital Loop filter. Each oscillator generates a different master clock frequency in the range of 5 mm to 24 mm and is selectable by the config pin.
The digital frequency synthesizer generates the Frequency-Translation signals (FT), which can be used to select the desired frequency that is multiple of the master clock frequency. The VCO circuit amplifies and adjusts the frequency according to the voltage of the loop filter. The integrated digital loop filter maintain the stability of the oscillator and also determined the internal jitter.
The frequency output from the bridge oscillator is modified by the frequency selector transient voltage, allowing the output range configuration by timing the resistive elements inside the device. The frequency range depends on the combination of voltage and the resistive element selected.
Finally, the analog output of the VCO circuit is filtered by a low-pass filter, which can further decrease the jitter of the output clock.
