Application Field
The AK93C55BL serial EEPROM memory provides a symmetrical 512 bytes of memory, addressing 128 x 8 bits in 16 page areas, suitable for industrial controllers, printing machines and medical equipment. Being a serial EEPROM, the memory is easily accessible with a two-wire interface.
Additional features include 8-byte page write protection and a 3.0V to 4.6V supply range. The wide supply voltage range allows the device to be powered directly from the external system power line, allowing the read/write operations to be easily implemented in systems with a variety of supply voltages.
Working Principle
The AK93C55BL contains three primary logic functions: the data memory, the memory address register and the control logic. The data memory can store 512 bytes (128 words by 8 bits); the address register stores the address of the memory the chip is currently accessing; and the control logic handles the communications and read/write instructions sent to the chip. The instructions determine what type of operation the running program is performing, such as writing to or reading from the memory.
Data is transmitted serially, a bit at a time, over the two-wire interface. The AK93C55BL contains two primary two-wire serial pins: SDA (serial data) and SCL (serial clock). By reading in the data and shifting it serially to the appropriate location, the AK93C55BL can write the data to the selected address.
The two operating modes used by the EEPROM are the Input (Idle) mode, which is used when the device is not actively working; and the Output (Standby) mode, which is used when the device is actively sending or receiving data. When the device is waiting for a request or for data, it will remain in the Input (Idle) mode. When the device is receiving or sending data, it will transition from the Input mode to the Output mode.
The AK93C55BL is an ideal memory device for embedded applications where short access times and reliable storage are required. It is a low cost, low power, extremely reliable and versatile solution for a number of projects.
