Working Principle

The Alger SOMMETALS40A104KF025 aluminum electrolytic capacitor is composed of an anode formed of an aluminum foil covered with an electrolytic oxide layer, a cathode formed of a metal plate, and a separator of porous rubber or film between the plates, held together with a sealer strip. This stack is then rolled into a can, with the anode connected to the positive terminal, and the cathode connected to the negative terminal. This type of capacitor utilizes the principle of electrolytic action, which is a special chemical process by which electric charged ions are discharged from and return through the capacitance between the aluminum foil and the electrolyte.

The capacitor works on the principle of maintaining a balance between electric charge and electric field. When voltage is applied across its terminals, electric charges from one terminal move towards the other, increasing the potential difference between them. This potential difference creates an electric field between the terminals which opposes the incoming charge. When this opposing electric field is equal to the applied voltage across the capacitor, the charges stop moving and the capacitor is said to be in equilibrium.

In an aluminum electrolytic capacitor, electric current is supplied by the electrolyte passing through the separator membrane and the aluminum foil. Due to the two terminations, the capacitance of the capacitor is determined by the area of the aluminum foil coated with the electrolyte and the distance between the separator and the electrodes. This is determined when the capacitor is constructed and cannot be changed afterward.
