Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are the most commonly used capacitors among all electrolytic capacitors. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in circuit applications. They have a relatively low cost, large capacity and polarization characteristics. Typically, they consist of a dry aluminum anode and a liquid electrolyte-soaked separator paper substrate, which forms an electrolyte solution dielectric layer of oxide film for capacitance.

The capacitor model ALS80U123NT400 is a type of aluminum electrolytic capacitor. This high voltage capacitor is an axial lead type consisting of a aluminum can and a single aluminum cathode with a rolled foil anode structure. It provides a capacitance value of 80uf at a rated working voltage of 350 volts. It is usually used in DC power supply circuits, filtering circuits, decoupling circuits, and surge protection circuits.

The working principle of the aluminum electrolytic capacitors is based on the physical property of the oxide film on the surface of the aluminum electrode. The aluminum electrode has a high reactivity, and forms an oxide film as an insulator on its surface in contact with the liquid electrolyte. When the external voltage is applied, the mobile electrolyte ions penetrate into the space between the thin oxide film and the aluminum plate to form a small amount of current conduction. The electric field of the external circuit is generated in the thin oxide film, and charges accumulate on both sides of the oxide film. The positive charges accumulate on the surface of the aluminum plate and the negative charges accumulate on the surface of the oxide film, forming a capacitor.

The advantages of aluminum electrolytic capacitors include large capacitance values combined with a high voltage rating. The disadvantage is that the working voltage declines with increasing frequency, and the application temperature range is limited. Aluminum is also vulnerable to corrosion, which needs to be taken into careful consideration when selecting the device.
