Linear Voltage Regulators are an essential part of modern Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs). The AN7715SP is a control IC (Integrated Circuit) designed to provide synchronously adjustable output voltage regulation for motor drives, DC Power supply, power management and other power applications.
The AN7715SP can be configured for either voltage or current mode of operation, and provides a high accuracy output voltage. It has two stages of feedback control which are composed of an inner loop and an outer loop. The first stage is an inner loop which provides voltage-feedback to the controller which gives a limit on the maximum amount of voltage that can be delivered to the load. The second stage is an outer loop that provides current-feedback to the controller. This feedback limits the maximum current that can be supplied to the load.
The AN7715SP has a built-in high side switch that provides PWM control of the load. It also has a built-in current sense amplifier, voltage sense amplifier and a scaler integrated circuit which provides scaling of the voltage and current sensing signals.
The AN7715SP provides two output levels. The first output level is adjustable from 0V to 12V. The adjustable output level can be set to provide a steady voltage even if the voltage at the input varies over a wide range. The second output level can be set to a fixed voltage such as 5V or 12V. The application field of the chip covers AC/DC adapters, uninterruptible power systems (UPS), DC-DC converters, solar energy conversion system and other power systems.
The operating principle behind the AN7715SP is that it takes an input voltage and changes it to a specified output that is needed by the load. The device comprises of two stages. The first stage is a voltage feedback loop which sets the voltage at the output by limiting the amount of voltage coming from the input. The second stage is a current feedback loop which sets the current at the output by limiting the amount of current coming from the input.

The current feedback loop includes an inverting amplifier which amplifies the deviation between the feedback signal and the reference voltage. The output of this amplifier is then fed into an integrator, which converts the current error signal into a voltage error signal. This is then fed into an error amplifier which amplifies the output of the integrator. This is then fed into a voltage-controlled oscillator that sets the frequency of the PWM output. This frequency sets the rise and fall times for the output current.
The AN7715SP provides a high level of regulation accuracy, and is suitable for use in power systems that require a high level of precision in setting the output voltage and current. It is also suitable for use in many applications including DC/DC Converters, AC/DC Adapters, and Uninterruptible Power Supplies.
