Analog Devices Power by Linear provides the AN77L03M as an adjustable low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator that contains a precision voltage reference, an error amplifier, a voltage divider, and a modulated pass element. Operating with a supply voltage as low as 2.5V, it can provide a load current of up to 200mA. The device is capable of operating with a wide input voltage range of 2.5V to 6V while providing a regulated voltage accuracy of ±1%.
The AN77L03M is a monolithic integrated circuit ideal for providing regulated voltage supply to the microcontrollers, digital signal processors, and related logic circuits. Additionally, the use of linear regulators for supplying power for low-power applications like sensor and communication receiver circuitry, as well as any other application requiring precision power supplies. Furthermore, the device has an adjustable output voltage range that spans from 1.25V to 5V. The adjustable voltage range allows the user to select the precise voltage desired for the specific application. Additionally, the device is available in two different packages – leaded (TO-92-L) and surface-mount (MSOP-10).
Functional Description
The device operates as an adjustable low-dropout linear regulator with a built-in reference voltage of 1.8V and a precise voltage control circuit. The output voltage is controlled by the external resistors connected between the FB pin (Vref) and ground (Gnd) pins. The FB pin acts as the feedback voltage of the device, to which a voltage divider is connected. The voltage divider, consisting of two resistors, R1 and R2, is connected between the output voltage and Gnd respective pins. The voltage at the output is given by the following expression:
Vout = 1.8 x (1 + R2/R1).
The voltage at the output pin is regulated using a modulation-controlled pass element consisting of a P-Channel MOSFET. The MOSFET is controlled using a PWM signal with a frequency determined by the external compensation capacitor connected to the FB/CP pin, which is proportional to the output voltage. As the output voltage increases, the frequency of the PWM signal increases. Consequently, the current to the load decreases, thereby controlling the output voltage and preventing it from exceeding its rated value.
