AOZ1072AI Application Field and Working Principle
AOZ1072AI is a voltage regulator IC, more specifically a DC-DC Charge Pump Switching Regulator, developed and manufactured by Alpha & Omega Semiconductor, Inc. It is designed to regulate the output of a standard 3.3V or 5V power supply with a maximum power consumption of up to 10A.
The wide input voltage range and high efficiency of the AOZ1072AI make it an attractive choice for applications such as industrial automation, computing, telecommunication, and consumer electronics. The IC supports an adjustable output voltage from 0.8V to 5V; and features a programmable output limit, over temperature protection and short-circuit protection.
Design Overview
The AOZ1072AI employs a charge pump converter topology wherein two series-connected pulses are generated and connected to the input of a two-stage boost converter. This converter provides the more efficient regulation of output voltage by utilizing two series-connected switch configurations, with each switch controlling a different voltage level.
The output of the two-stage boost converter is then fed to the output of the regulator. The output of the regulator is delivered to a low-impedance Vin mode, making the voltage at the output pin of the IC closely track the input. This design helps reduce the input-output voltage differential that can occur at light load conditions.
Control and Protection Circuitry
The chip contains several control and protection circuitry components such as a 15μA bias current oscillator, an over-temperature protection circuit, an over-voltage protection circuit, and a short-circuit protection circuit. The over-voltage protection circuit trips when the voltage at the output pin exceeds 5.2V.
The over-temperature protection circuit shuts down the IC when the junction temperature reaches 150°C. Finally, the short-circuit protection circuit cuts off the internal switch when the output current exceeds a predetermined value.
Power Good Output
The power good output (PGO) monitors the output voltage to indicate that the voltage at the output has reached its programmed level and that the power supply is within an acceptable voltage range. The Power Good Output will assert low (~0.8V) if the output voltage is within the programmed range.
