PMIC - Voltage Regulators – Linear can be defined as the application of a low cost, low power and efficient linear regulator, in order to regulate the output voltage and current flow of the power supply. The AP2210N-3.0TRG1 from Diodes Incorporated is one such voltage regulator designed for single/dual cell Li-ion/Li-Polymer battery powered applications, like handsets and mobile components.
The AP2210N-3.0TRG1 is a 3A low dropout (LDO) linear regulator with exceptionally low quiescent current consumption, allowing it to work efficiently even when operating at extremely low outputs or with only a slight voltage headroom. It is specifically designed to provide up to 3A of continuous output current (non-surge) and handle high transient current loads (up to 5A).
It has an operating range of 2.3V-5.5V and several voltage selections, providing a maximum of 3.0V in single cell Li-Polymer applications. The device is offered in an ultra-small SOT-23-5 and DFN-4x4-10L package and it requires no additional external components, including no ceramic output capacitors.
The AP2210N-3.0TRG1 features a precision enable/disable control which is designed to ensure that the device achieves a high regulation accuracy even during shutdown and startup conditions. It provides superior transient response, good thermal stability and ripple rejection.

The AP2210N-3.0TRG1 working principle is based on the voltage regulation of a low power and high efficiency linear regulator using a pass element, or a voltage divider. This voltage divider is made up of a series combination of a resistor, a capacitor and a zener diode. The zener diode ensures the stability of the voltage across the load, while the resistor and the capacitor help to minimize the noise resulting from the power supply ripple.
When the voltage across the load is higher than the voltage reference level, the voltage regulator will reduce the load voltage by a proportional amount. This reduction is determined by the amount of current entering the voltage regulator. Since the AP2210N-3.0TRG1 uses the linear regulator principle, it has excellent performance in terms of noise, power efficiency and transient response.
In addition, the AP2210N-3.0TRG1 features protection circuitry to improve the reliability and safety of the application. It has both over-voltage and under-voltage protection and over-temperature protection. In order to ensure the integrity and proper functioning of the device, it is fully protected against output short-circuit, reverse current flow and over-current events.
