Analog to digital converters (ADCs) are chips or integrated circuits used to transform analog signals to digital signals that can be read by digital devices. The Texas Instruments AS1525-TD-EK-ST Evaluation Board combines a 15-bits, 8 single-ended analog-to-digital (ADC) converter with a digital temperature sensor. With integrated SMBus and I2C communication protocol capability and an open-drain output, this device can help easily interface with customers’ own signal processing systems with high reliability.
The AS1525-TD-EK-ST Evaluation Board could match application fields such as portable medical analysis, civil and industrial machinery, data collection, senor network and remote weapons system. For most of them, the analog signals from external sensors need input and next convert to the digital signals which could easily interface with the processing systems and further conversion.
The AS1525-TD-EK-ST is a highly accurate Sigma-Delta converter with an excellent low-noise performance. It also performs high speed conversions and is very suitable for low-power applications. The device has a broadband conversion frequency set to set to 102.4 kHz to 102.4 kHz and is available in a standard 16-pin SOICW or TSSOP package. Some features make it ideal for many applications.
The main functional specifications of the AS1525-TD-EK-ST converter is as follows: the resolution is 15 bits and the conversion accuracy is 0.1 mV; differential linearity error (DNL) is 2 LSB; the temperature coefficient is 255 PPM/°C and the power dissipation current is 4.63mA/channel; Common mode input voltage range is from 0V to 3.3V; and the maximum conversion rate is 5Msps. Dynamic performance is also very stable.
The working principle of the AS1525-TD-EK-ST Evaluation Board is based on an open-drain output CMOS analog-to-digital converter (ADC). In this type of converter, the on-chip temperature sensor is referenced to its output. The internal clock is used to sample the signal at a given rate. The board acts as a device driver, connecting to an external microcontroller or signal processor. 32 or 64 time multiplexed inputs, 16-bit conversion results, and two packet bytes sent to the controller for controlling the board. After the setup, the board performs single, or simultaneous acquisition and conversion. The conversion results are collected by the controller and the processing is done according to them.
