.IntroductionThe ATMEGA1284P-XPLD is an evaluation board from Atmel Corporation which features the AVR microcontroller. It is a powerful and versatile evaluation board for testing, prototyping, debugging and training applications using the AVR family of microcontrollers. The board is packed with features, including the extra large AVR-XPLD Flash Programmable Logic Device, 1MB flash memory, 64kB RAM, 14 GPIOs, 12-channel ADC, 11-channel PWM and a wide range of communication protocols including UART, SPI, I2C and CAN. The board is based on the Atmel ATmega1284P microcontroller and it comes fully assembled with all components included. It is also supported by Atmel Studio 6.1 or higher Integrated Development Environment (IDE).

Working Principle and Features
The ATmega1284P-XPLD board runs on the Atmel chip ATmega1284P, which is a low-power and high performance 8-bit AVR family microcontroller with a 64kB Flash memory and 4kB RAM. The board is packed with features including the extra large XPLD Flash Programmable Logic Device, dual differentiated analog comparators, 8-bit high speed Analog-to-Digital Converters, advanced reset circuitry, DMA controller and watchdog timer. The board also has fourteen Digital IOs (GPIOs), four of which are available in the extended GPIOs, eleven Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) channels, and eleven USART channels for communication as well as an on-chip temperature sensor for temperature monitoring. It is also equipped with an LED and switches for input control.
In addition, the board features an integrated XPLD logic device which allows users to integrate their own externals components such as logic gates, memory devices and sensors. The XPLD logic device enables users to create various logic functions and achieve faster and reliable circuitry. The board also has a reset button for system resets, a reset pin for software resets and volume and refresh buttons to control the signal of each port.
The on board USB port can be used to program the board with internet and ATmel Communication s-Comm protocol. The board also has an Ethernet port which can be used to connect to a PC for debugging and programming. The board is supported by Atmel Studio 6.1 or higher Integrated Development Environment (IDE).
