Embedded systems refer to dedicated, computer-controlled devices, in which the computers may be embedded in whole or in part within the device for a specific purpose. Heralded as the 8th most essential engineering revolution in the world today, embedded systems are becoming increasingly popular as they are now being used within nearly every modern device or system. The ATUC256L4U-D3HT is one such device, an 8-bit microcontroller from the Atmel AVR family.
ATUC256L4U-D3HT is a low power and low cost 8-bit microcontroller. It has SRAM 32K with flash memory of 256K. It does not need external memory as its system architecture is based on Harvard Architecture. It is mainly used to provide functions to embedded system devices. It is often used in industrial automation and robotics, home appliances, office machines, automotive systems and consumer electronic products.
Atmel AVR series microcontroller uses Harvard Architecture which is based on two independent buses: the instruction bus and the data bus. In this architecture the program and data are stored in separate memory locations. On the other hand,In Von Neumann architecture only one bus is used for data and program fetching. The instruction bus reads the instructions from program memory while the data bus retrieves data from data memory. With the help of Harvard Architecture, the ATUC256L4U-D3HT can perform two separate operations at the same time.
The ATUC256L4U-D3HT also has an on-chip clock oscillator which can be configured for a frequency range up to 16MHz. It also contains multiple registers and counters to store essential data. One of the important functionalities of this microcontroller is its ability to automatically generate interrupts which will help with device functions like sampling and data analysis. The ATUC256L4U-D3HT has built in peripherals such as USB, timers, Inter Integrated Circuit (I²C) and Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI).
