Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are used in a wide variety of applications due to their excellent electrical properties. They are made with a dielectric material, usually aluminum oxide, sandwiched between two electrodes, one of which is a metal plate. The other electrode is made of a material that has a high electrical resistance, such as a carbon impregnated paper plate. The two electrodes are separated by a small amount of electrolyte. The dielectric layer provides insulation between the two plates, allowing current to flow when an electrical voltage is applied across the two terminals.

Working Principle

The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is relatively simple. The two electrodes have different electrical charges, one having a positive (+) charge and the other having a negative (-) charge. As a voltage is applied across the two electrodes, electrons travel from the positive plate to the negative plate, forming an electric field. This electric field effectively creates an “air gap” between the plates, which prevents the flow of electricity in the opposite direction. The resulting electric field stores electrical energy, which is then released as a current upon interruption of the voltage.
