Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used in consumer electronics, industrial power electronics, military, and some automotive applications. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are the most common type of capacitor in use and are made up of two aluminum plates separated by an oxygensurrounded electrolyte. The process of electrolytic capacitor formation results in an extremely thin dielectric layer, called a “barrier layer”, between the two plates. The purpose of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor is to store electrical energy and to provide a heightened level of system stability and protection.
B41044A7475M
The B41044A7475M is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor from EPCOS, a manufacturer of electronic components. It is a radial-leaded capacitor and is used for circuit-board mounted, low-leakage capacitor in AC and DC applications. The B41044A7475M has a rated voltage of 75 V and is rated for capacitance values ranging from 100 uF to 4.7 mF. The B41044A7475M can be used in a wide range of applications such as DC-DC converters, switching power supplies, audio systems, and automotive. It is capable of operating at temperatures between -25 degrees C and +85 degrees C.
Working principle
The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on Faraday’s law of electrolysis. As an electrical charge is applied to the capacitor, an electron current is formed between the two plates. The charges stored on the plates create a potential difference across them which is proportional to the applied voltage. As current flows from one plate to the other, an electric field is created which opposes the flow of charge and creates a voltage across the capacitor. This opposes the applied voltage until the stored charge reaches a certain equilibrium value.
The capacitance of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is determined by the area of the plates, the distance between them, and the dielectric material that is used. The dielectric material is typically an oxygen-saturated electrolyte solution which acts as an insulator between the two electrodes. The capacitance of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor can usually be estimated by taking the product of the cross-sectional area of the plates and the dielectric constant of the material.
As the electrons move to the cathode (positive charge) plate, they accumulate and turn into an electrical current. At the same time, positive ions flow from the anode (negative charge) plate to the cathode plate, forming a chemical reaction that forms an insulating barrier, called the “barrier layer”, between the two plates. This barrier layer, also referred to as an “Aluminum oxide layer”, is extremely thin and it is this that gives the aluminum electrolytic capacitor its high level of capacitance.
The aluminum electrolytic capacitor is known for its high current capacity and low cost, which makes it ideal for cost-sensitive applications where the required capacitance values are not too high. It is also known for its performance in high-temperature and vibration applications, as well as for its high ripple current capability. Furthermore, the aluminum electrolytic capacitor has very good temperature characteristics, making it a preferred choice for power electronics applications where thermal performance is critical. As such, the aluminum electrolytic capacitor is an important component for a wide range of applications, from consumer electronics to industrial power electronics.
