Working Principle
The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on the Faraday’s Law of electrolysis. This law states that when an electrical current is applied to an electrolyte, ions are attracted to the electrodes and either form a deposit (in the case of a positive current) or are removed (in the case of a negative current). This causes a double-layer of electrons to be created between the two electrodes, and this is what stores the electrical charge in the capacitor.
This double-layer of electrons is what makes aluminum electrolytic capacitors so much more efficient than conventional capacitors. This is because the layers of electrons allow for a larger surface area, which results in a higher capacitance. This higher capacitance allows an aluminum electrolytic capacitor to store much more electrical energy than a conventional capacitor of the same size.
In addition to their higher capacitance, aluminum electrolytic capacitors also have a longer life than conventional capacitors. This is due to the fact that they are sealed and, as a result, their electrolyte does not evaporate. As such, they can withstand a high amount of heat and operating temperatures, making them ideal for applications that require a long life and reliable operation.
