Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors consist of an anode foil, separator, and a cathode. The anode and cathode are usually made of aluminum foil separated in a non-conductive material called the separator. The electrolyte used in the capacitor is usually an ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer (EPDM) rubber which is impregnated into the capacitor.

When a voltage is applied across the terminals of the capacitor, a current flows through the electrolyte which reacts with the anode and cathode foils. This reaction creates an electrical field between the anode and cathode foils which causes the electric charge to be stored on the capacitor.

The amount of stored charge is proportional to the applied voltage and is limited by the physical construction of the capacitor components, such as the dielectric material and foil thickness. The dielectric material in aluminum electrolytic capacitors has a specific breakdown voltage rating, and when the applied voltage exceeds this rating, the capacitor is likely to be damaged.
