Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are electric double layer capacitors that are made using an anode of a pure aluminum foil with an oxidized layer formed on its surface, a porous paper separator soaked in electrolyte, and a cathode of aluminum foil. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are mainly used because of their relatively small size and high capacitance, and are therefore applicable to various types of circuit designs.
B41550E4339Q000, a product of Vishay Intertechnology, is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor. Its application field includes general purpose, energy storage, power supplies, and automotive applications. It has a wide temperature range of -55°C to +105°C, a capacitance range of 3.3 to 68000 μF, and a voltage range of 25 to 1000 VDC.
Working Principle
The aluminum electrolytic capacitor works on the basis of the electrolytic polarization phenomenon. The action of the electrolyte contained in the capacitor leads to an electrical double layer formed on the electrolyte-electrode interface. The formation of this double layer increases the electrical insulation properties and non-linear capacitance of the capacitor.
The surface of the anodic aluminum foil in the B41550E4339Q000 electrochemical capacitor is coated with an, electrically insulating, oxide layer. In the presence of an electrolyte, in which anions and cations are present, there is a higher concentration of cations near the anode, while the anions concentrate near the cathode. This results in an electrical double layer which stores the electric charge.
When an AC voltage is applied to the aluminum electrolytic capacitor, the current will have two parts: a charging current, which is the bulk current that charges the capacitor, and a dielectric leakage current, which is the current that leaks through the oxide layer of the anode. The charging and discharging of the capacitor is caused by the dielectric absorption of the oxide layer.
