When the turn-off voltage is applied to the anode, the PN junction returns to its reverse resistance state, meaning current will not be able to pass through the diode anymore. This means that if the reverse voltage is applied to the anode, the PN junction is not likely to conduct current further, thus protecting the circuit from any overvoltage or reverses polarity.
