The BOOSTXL-BATPAKMKII is an easy-to-use, programmable battery supply and fuel gauge expansion board for the Texas Instruments TM4C/TM4CPlus microcontroller. Designed specifically for NiMH or Li-ion battery applications, the BOOSTXL-BATPAKMKII features a wide range of integrated features including dual LDO regulators, dual boosters, low power LED indicators and the TPS659ld1 energy controller as well as the ADC channels necessary to monitor battery status and health. Additionally, the board is able to operate from Li-ion or NiMH batteries as well as from an external voltage source.

The BOOSTXL-BATPAKMKII is ideal for applications needing an autonomous or self-contained battery supply and charger, as well as applications requiring a low-cost fuel gauge. Being designed to PMBus and SMBus specifications, the board allows the internal status and controller registers to be programmable, providing flexibility when used with various microcontroller applications. The BOOSTXL-BATPAKMKII can also handle multiple batteries types, such as Li-ion, NiMH and even nickel-based batteries.

Working Principles

The BOOSTXL-BATPAKMKII works by balancing the charge and discharge current of two battery types (Li-ion and NiMH). The fuel gauge, or battery monitor, measures the battery’s charge and discharge and the available capacity while the microcontroller monitors the current and voltage. The fuel gauge is accurate up to 1% and measures a range of discharge rates, temperature, relative humidity, and impedance.

In order to achieve efficient charge and discharge management and prevent overcharging or discharging, two LDO regulators are provided: one provides power for the fuel gauge and the other supplies power for the microcontroller. An additional voltage booster allows the microcontroller to provide power at up to 5V for the external device(s).

The board also features an internal temperature sensor, enabling the battery to be kept at a safe temperature during charge and discharge. This temperature sensor also enables the board to provide maximum safety during storage and transportation.

Multiple dynamic LED indicators can also be found on the board to accurately measure battery charge and discharge time. Programmable LED current setting allows the LED indicators to accurately show charge and discharge progress.
