The BoostXL-DRV8301 is an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) designed to specifically aid in the management and monitoring of both brushed and brushless DC motor applications. The device includes an on-chip isolated driver designed to enable the control of DC motors with the smallest possible number of additional components. The BoostXL-DRV8301 is a great solution for applications such as adjustable speed drives, electric window lifts, actuators, robot arms and other industrial equipment that requires high accuracy in motor control. This device has been used in conjunction with many products such as robot lawn mowers, motorized exercise equipment and medical devices.
The BoostXL-DRV8301 is a stand-alone Texas Instruments TMS320F2803x device with a motor control module (MCM) controller. The MCM on-chip consists of a Digital Signal Processor (DSP), Analog Front End (AFE) interface, and memory to provide comprehensive motor control system. The embedded DSP operates at a clock frequency that is adjustable based on motor current and application. The device includes both hardware-based PWM control and a selectable MOSFET integrated driver solution, with a DMOS, half-bridge device that includes PWM generator, motor protection, and current sense functionality.
The BoostXL-DRV8301 features an embedded flash memory which can be used for motor control code, input/output digital parameters and application specific parameters. It includes a selectable feedback loop that allows the designer to choose the sensorless vector control (SVC) or field oriented control (FOC) for their motor application. The BoostXL-DRV8301 also includes a built-in temperature sensing diode and an on-chip diagnostics feature. The device can be paired with the spin motor control libraries, enabling faster development time for custom motor control algorithms.
The BoostXL-DRV8301 evaluation board is a fully integrated development platform that enables evaluation and use of the device.The evaluation board includes MCU, Adaptive Voltage Scaling (AVS), real-time emulation, boot loader code, control law libraries, and motor system interface tools. The board also includes integrated power supplies, optical 8-bit digital isolator which eliminates ground loop problems, and an integrated hall sensor, which allows for a more precise control. The evaluation board also includes a graphical user interface (GUI) that enables users to quickly evaluate performance, adjust parameters, and design their own motor control solution.
The BoostXL-DRV8301 works by supplying pulses of current to a motor in order to control its speed, and its working principle is the same as any other DC motor. When the pulses are set to the same frequency as the rotational speed of the motor, the motor will maintain its current speed. Depending on the motor type, the pulse amplitude can be adjusted to change its speed. The device also includes a built in power switch which can be used to switch the motor on and off. By changing the pulse frequency, the motor can be accelerated or decelerated depending on the application.
The BoostXL-DRV8301 allows the user to control, monitor, and optimize motor speed and torque. The on-board components allow for the full operation and tuning of the device. With this evaluation board, it is easy to demonstrate the performance of the device for motor control applications. The evaluation board is a great tool for the design and development of custom motor control solutions, as it is ready to be programmed and used in a variety of applications.
