The BQ21040DBVR is a highly integrated, Power Management IC (PMIC) designed specifically for battery-powered and AC-transformer-based portable applications such as phones and PDAs. This PMIC, originally designed by TI, offers a complete solution for multi-chemistry Li-Ion, Li-Polymer, and Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery charging and also battery stack temperature monitoring and control.
The BQ21040DBVR delivers a simple, low-cost, integrated power delivery solution for handheld applications requiring charging of 1-4 cells of Li-Ion, Li-Polymer, and NiMH battery types. The device includes a digitally-controlled, variable-frequency battery stack voltage regulator so that it can directly charge a battery stack to any voltage. The regulator is capable of accurately setting the output voltage based on feedback from the battery pack and supporting cell-balancing to maintain full charge. TI\'s BQ21040DBVR also includes a thermal protection feature that implements a temperature monitoring system, so the application will be protected from damage due to high-temperature battery pack operation.
The BQ21040DBVR allows for easy integration of charging capabilities with a variety of systems through its five dedicated control pins. The high degree of integrated features makes the device ideal for both original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and solution providers. The device\'s wide range of features also allows developers to select the optimal features for their application.
The device works by using flyback power topology for the main power switching, which means that the output voltage (VOUT) is regulated by control of the duty cycle of the power switches through pulse width modulation (PWM).This duty cycle is then regulated by a digital controller which includes a PI-Controller, offset and gain compensation, and multiple digital to analog converters (DACs). The digital controller provides protection from overvoltage and undervoltage. Additionally, the device includes an internal peak current sense - a hardware protection from overcurrent - that limits the maximum current through the power switches.
The BQ21040DBVR also features an integrated on-board power switch for load switching and overcurrent protection. In addition, the device includes a low-voltage/zero-drain battery stack voltage monitor to detect the actual stack voltage, which is then compared to the reference provided by the host. An adjustable watchdog timer is included to detect connection failure or shutdowns, in which case the device will automatically shut down when the timer condition is violated.
The BQ21040DBVR offers a wide range of integrated features, allowing easy integration into a variety of systems and providing a complete PMIC solution for battery-based systems. The device\'s variable input voltage range enables it to be used in a variety of applications, and offers cost savings in terms of design complexity and cost.
The BQ21040DBVR is an excellent choice for portable battery-powered systems, providing a simple, low-cost solution for charging Li-Ion, Li-Polymer, and NiMH batteries. With its wide range of features and temperature monitoring system for thermal protection, the device is an ideal choice for OEMs and solution providers.
