The BQ24070RHLT battery charger pulse-width modulated (PWM) switch-mode charger circuit is designed to provide a simple and robust solution for charging single-cell Li-ion batteries. The BQ24070RHLT operates using pulse-width modulation (PWM). A resistor is used to set the desired output current, and an internal loop determines the optimal charging cycle. The PWM amplifies the charging current to charge the battery at a constant voltage while simultaneously managing the current limiting. The BQ24070RHLT also provides battery temperature monitoring, charge termination, and multiple safety features in order to prevent overcharging and over discharging the battery.The input voltage range of the BQ24070RHLT is 4.5V to 24V, allowing for a wide variety of sources. The device may be current limited and short-circuit protected via sensing the input voltage or detecting an overtemperature condition at the battery.To enable low input voltage start up, a voltage-up circuit is integrated into the device to separately boost the enable signal above the input voltage. When the enable goes high, the internal oscillator will start running and charging the battery starts.The charge rate is adjustable based on the resistance connected to the IADJ terminal. A low input current is set at 1% of the IADJ setting, allowing a very low quiescent current operating mode (<10 µA). For higher charge rates, the IADJ terminal can be adjusted such that the charge rate is between 0.3A to 1.5A.The BQ24070RHLT employs safety features to avoid overcharging and overwarming the battery. During the charging operation, this device will monitor the battery voltage and temperature. An internal timer will shut off the charging circuitry when the charge current drops below an internal threshold or when the temperature exceeds an internal threshold. Two soft-start algorithms are additionally implemented to avoid large inrush current at startup.Conclusion
