BQ24151AYFFT is an example of PMICs for battery charging applications developed by TI. BQ24151A is a fully integrated single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer standalone battery charger, featuring constant frequency and current regulation operating from 4.5V to 16V DC. The device includes system power FET automatically regulated by the application and features a course state current regulation of up to 26V, and a fine state current regulation of up to 4.54V. The device is designed to optimize the charging of Lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries. It can work with multiple AC/DC power suppliers, including wall adapters with up to 26V output to support multiple applications on different platforms.The device is also integrated with a set of transient voltage suppression (TVS) and reverse current blocking diode protection to enhance the charger’s robustness against input voltage transients or reverse current conditions and assures safe operation under fault conditions. The charger can also sense various temperature conditions and automatically adjust the charging current accordingly to optimize the battery life and ensure faster charging time under specified conditions. The device also supports an optional overtemperature protection mechanism to shut down the charger when extreme temperature conditions are encountered. This device also has built-in input and output short circuit protection at the power side of the circuit.The working principle of the BQ24151A is based on Constant Frequency Control (CFC) with an adjustable current sense, which controls battery current and voltage. By constantly monitoring the input voltage, it maintains a constant battery charge current at an optimum level with tight voltage tolerance. This allows for a high degree of accuracy and faster charging time, as well as provides a feature to switch off power FET when not in use. Furthermore, the device includes the following features to enhance the charger performance and safety, such as constant frequency control, battery temperature monitoring, input surge, over-temperature protection, output overvoltage protection, and Under voltage Lockout (UVLO) for protection.The intelligent charging capability of BQ24151A is fully compliant with the global trend of implementing high-efficiency, low-power chargers. It is suitable for portable applications where power sources of different voltages are available. It offers charging in Constant Current/Constant Voltage (CC/CV) mode, and the integrated power FET ensures high efficiency and flexibility. The charger is also designed as a low-cost solution with fewer external components.
